Calydonian Boar

The Calydonian Boar was sent by Artemis to punish King Oeneus for failing to honour her in sacrifice.

The giant, wild boar caused widespread damage and death to the rural region around Calydon. Oeneus asked for heroes in Greece to hunt down the boar. This tale is told fully in the Calydonian Boar Hunt in the Heroic Age page.

In the war between the Argos and Thebes, the exiled Calydonian prince Tydeus carried the shield with the image of the Calydonian Boar. Also, Tydeus does appear in the list of hunters of the Calydonian Boar.
