Samson was the second of the Twelve Peers to fall. Valdabrun drove his lance through Samson, but Roland killed the Saracen in return; Roland drove his sword Durendal into Valdabrun, which split Valdabrun down the middle. This mighty blow also killed Valdabrun's horse, Gramimund.
